As 2018 draws to a close I wanted to take a moment to reflect and look back over the past year. 2018 has brought some incredible opportunities, chances to see parts of the world that I never thought I’d see and great times with both new and old friends to name a few. I’ve learnt a lot and had the chance to experience new things for which I am extremely grateful. Here are some of the best bits!
This year I spent 6 months working in the PR industry at a few different agencies and in-house at Visa. I was able to experience life in a working PR office, dealing with clients, talking to the media and taking part in producing some incredible campaigns. Spending time working in PR made my university course come to life and I was able to learn some incredible skills from some amazing people that I will keep in contact with over the coming years. I also learnt that whilst the opportunities were incredible, you don’t get anywhere without trial and error. I worked hard to secure work placements and was unsuccessful in many but I learnt that the most important thing you can do is pick yourself up and try again. I ended up working in three jobs that all taught me something different and contributed to one of the best summers of my life and if I’d not taken the different opportunities as they came around this wouldn’t have been the case. I was truly lucky to gain the experience that I did but most of all I learnt that you don’t get anywhere without hard work.
This year I was also lucky enough to visit some amazing places. I took a plane up to Edinburgh for a weekend, a truly beautiful city and spent a few days pounding the pavements of Rome, drowning in gelato and great coffee! My boyfriend and I spent a week in Rhodes, soaking up some September sun and we took a city break in Paris just before Christmas, visiting the Christmas markets and eating La Durée macarons (the best of the best!). On top of that, I was extremely lucky to have the chance to visit San Francisco during my internship with Visa. I’d never been to the US before so this was an amazing experience! I met so many new people from all over the world and made some friends for life in an incredible city!
During the course of the year, I met so many new and wonderful people. From new work colleagues to other interns and university colleagues, I met some truly inspiring people that I will consider not only colleagues but friends. I realised how much you can learn from the people in your life and how much we can help each other and I look forward to continuing to build on these new friendships and keep learning from the inspirational and wonderful people in my life.
To top off an amazing year, I have spent some much needed time with my friends and family this Christmas. We can get so wrapped up in work, stress and daily life that sometimes we need to just stop and enjoy spending time with the people we love the most. Christmas is a great time to do this, but this year I want to make sure that I switch off more often and fully appreciate all of the special people in my life.
So, as we turn out the lights of 2018 and step into 2019 I look ahead to another busy but rewarding year as I hopefully graduate from university, get my first real job in PR and keep learning and growing into the best version of myself. I’m looking forward to the journey!
